Another Whowwww at BABEL VII by German journalist and board member Dieter Topp

“My tree’s forest” by Sasho Dimoski, a North of Impact Theatre Company’s production in co-production with NT JHK Dzinot, Macedonia, artistic direction by Aleksandar Ivanovski, became my last night’s whowww. It has been a small show with actor Vasil Zafircev and composer Sasko Kostov doing live music. Both are from Macedonia. The story is a link between several texts, quite different, one from Bernard Marie Koltes, “The night just before the forest” and an actual text by contemporary writer from Macedonia, Sasho Dimoski.

“I started to do independent productions and to collaborate with the ones from North of Impact Theatre Company. It is the first show that we did together, a story about things we consider socially important in the world, like migration, the peoples’ movement. It is about a man at his last trip towards a forest, where one goes, to give up the ghost next to his tree, a retrospective odyssey of emotions of the life of this character, of his childhood, of his love, of what he had lost, to the end of his life” said Alexandar Ivanovski during an interview with Oana Maria Grigore.

A theatrical visual trip through being, through emotions, through memories, an emotional journey told by the body of Vasil Zafircev. The actor and contemporary dancer fascinated by a powerful voice and extreme movements on stage. Everything he did seemed to be improvised, but he strongly followed a concept. He delivered the rhythm of the performance followed by sounds, songs and music created by the composer with the help of many different objects like pieces of wood, a pipe or other elements as well as his voice.

The visual aspect has also been very important because there was no artificial light; the audience received flashlights to be used as torches and we actually have been also the ones to put light upon the actor and the show. So we followed the journey into the dark forest to watch the story of the character.

The performance has been a theatrical experiment, a theatrical journey, an exchange between the audience and the show, not only to perceive the feelings of the character but also to see how spectators react. So between actor, musician and audience an interactional show has been created, a very emotional one … Whooooow
